This is an unusual and interesting book. The author was a business man, but the countryman was nearer the top in him than in most of us. He made his hobby the study of the animals and birds which lived near his home, and by means of notes and camera was able to show what a great deal of activity goes on in a small patch of ground when it is left reasonably undisturbed. The value of this book lies in the encouragement it gives to the amateur naturalist to learn to adapt his behaviour to that of the wild creatures and by so doing to be able to observe them closely, to understand how they live, an understanding which enhances the significance of all life, including our own.
