Chris Ferris takes the reader into the heart of an English wood at night. Plunging through hazel thickets, scrambling up chalky banks or just sitting quietly for hours on end in the cold of a January night - she is there, watching and recording the behaviour of the animals which have come to accept her as part of their world. As well as her beloved badgers, she witnesses the birth of leverets, toad migrations, a sparrowhawk on its plucking post, squirrels working busily at night and a fox which - for no apparent reason - systematically bites off dandelion heads. These are just some of the remarkable observations of an amateur naturalist whose powers of description and attention to detail bring to life an extraordinary animal theatre.
