The story illustrates in miniature the world-wide conflict between human and wildlife interests....a struggle which surely must be resolved by sensible compromise, not short-term self-interest.
The author's charming account highlights the intense interest which is aroused when people get to know wild animals as individuals and follow their fortunes from year to year. Life is never quite the same again. You may enjoy wonderful films of wild animals on television, but if you find them in your own garden the experience is very different; adventure is no longer second-hand, you become truly involved.
